NIST 800-82is an Overlay within the NIST Special Publication (SP) 800-53r4, a set of cybersecurity standards for Federal information systems and organizations that are subject to the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA). Because many of the security controls in NIST SP 800-53 were create with IT systems in mind, NIST adapted them for industrial control systems, since ICS have unique performance, reliability, and safety requirements.
The NIST SP800-82 Overlay provides guidance on the specific controls that apply to operational technology environments, as well as recommendations about how to tailor the SP 800-53 security controls for an OT system. Because of the detailed and prescriptive nature of these controls, many critical infrastructure organizations look to this standard to help guide their cybersecurity programs internally, even if they aren’t subject to FISMA compliance.
