Data Sheet: Internal Network Security Monitoring - Meeting NERC CIP-015-1 Requirements

View Data Sheet

Internal Network Security Monitoring (INSM) is an increasingly important capability for protecting North America's bulk energy system and an emerging NERC CIP requirement with the new CIP-015 standard. This comes from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)'s directive for utilities to enhance cybersecurity by maintaining visibility over communications between networked devices.

While CIP Reliability Standards have traditionally protected the electronic security perimeter, FERC identified a gap in addressing internal network vulnerabilities. INSM provides ongoing visibility of communications within a trusted zone and detects malicious activity that bypasses perimeter controls. It also allows for early detection of anomalous network activity, indicating potential attacks, and enhances quick mitigation and recovery.

Industrial Defender helps responsible entities implement INSM capabilities and meet compliance requirements. Our Industrial Defender Data Collector (IDC) serves as an industry-proven OT sensor, fulfilling the requirements for internal network security monitoring.
